Problems of Illiteracy
Adults with limited reading, writing, math and computer skills will have difficulty in functioning in today’s world.
  • 20% of the adult population in the U.S. perform at or below a fifth grade skill level and 38% of adults in Baltimore City and 20% of those in Baltimore County:
    • Cannot complete an application.
    • Cannot read instructions of a frozen dinner.
    • Have trouble comprehending a newspaper article.
    • Probably do not have a checking or bank account.
    • Cannot read a map

  • Over 90% of adults who perform at or below a fifth grade skill level are not receiving literacy instruction or skills enhancement.

  • 75% of unemployed adults have reading and writing difficulties.

  • 44% of adults over age 65 scored in the lowest reading level.

CHILDREN

– Children who have reading problems and live in a family where literacy is limited and undervalued will have more difficulties in achieving at school and later in life.

  • Children of unemployed parents who have not completed high school are 5 times more likely to drop out of school.
  • Children of adults who participate in literacy programs automatically improve their grades and test scores, raise their reading levels and are less likely to drop out of school.
TEACH THE PARENT, REACH THE CHILD!

BUSINESS

– For American businesses to remain competitive and productive, employees must be able to read, write, compute, communicate and solve problems.

  • 90% of Fortune’s 1000 executives said that low literacy is hurting their productivity and profitably.

  • 60% of front-line workers in goods-producing businesses have difficulty applying information from a text to a required task.

  • 20% of adults lack the skills to be fully productive
EDUCATING EMPLOYEES INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY!

HEALTH

– People with limited skills have difficulty in reading and acting on medical information, which may result in more severe health problems, medication errors and a higher risk of hospitalization.

  • Persons with low literacy report poorer general health.

  • Most patient materials are written at grade levels higher than their reading abilities.

  • In one study of hospital patients:
        • 60% could not read a standard consent form.
        • 42% could not understand directions for taking medicine on an empty stomach.
        • 30% could not read and understand basic health materials.
        • 26% could not understand appointment information.

  • In another study, 81% of adults over age 65 had inadequate health literacy.
